Park Building Implosions
July 2ND, 2007
The implosion
of Building 9 was to me, the better of the two implosions. I
went to this implosion as a trial run for Building 23, which
was a building I was more familiar with, and one that I thought
would be bigger and better. It turns out that Building 9 is actually
the larger building. In addition Bldg 9 also contained a lot
more concrete than Bldg 23, and as such, produced a much larger
dust cloud, and thus, a more spectacular implosion.
I woke up around
6:15 and headed to the site. I expected a large crowd and traffic
back ups, so I parked in nearby Maplewood Park and walked over
the pedestrian bridge over RTE 104 to the viewing area to the
South West of the implosion. There were an estimated 2,000-3,000
people on hand to witness the implosion. Some even stood on top
of the Kodak Research Labs to get a birds eye view.
The implosion
went off as planned at 8:00AM and kicked up a huge cloud of dust.
The dust overwhelemed the viewers directly to the west of the
building, and even managed to reach my viewing area. A steady
mist of fine concrete and dust particles floated down like snow.
Fortunately I had my dust mask with me. Surprisingly the dust
cleared up after about 10-15 minutes and you could clearly see
the collapsed building site. All went well by the looks of it,
except for a few downed trees.
